Web 2.0 initial thoughts

When reading "Riding the Waves of Web 2.0" it really had me thinking how my own experiences with the internet and social media has developed. The article talks about what has changed between Web 1.0 and 2.0 and the many people who are interacting with this technology and I was wondering when did I personally begin to use Web 2.0 to the fullest?

My dad is an IT specialist so growing up there were plenty of computers in the house. My first computer ran on Windows 98 and all I did was draw on the paint application and play my Barbie CD-ROM game that I had begged my mom to buy for me. Now, I know this isn't using the internet but this is my first memory of using this technology.

After racking my brain as a went to sleep last night to try to remember when I was first introduced to the Web, I then remembered my elementary technology class. The class was taught by Mr. Lapraud and we had the Apple computers that were tan and had the rainbow apple just under the screen.  He taught us especially how to use google and the "I'm feeling lucky" feature.

From there on technology seemed explode at my finger tips and one thing led to another. I began using google to help me with homework and projects, signing up for myspace, sharing photos on flickr, and getting on Facebook.

Today, thanks to smart phones, I have the world at my finger tips and have so many apps to connect with different people. While I am an active participant in Web 2.0 I still believe I am not using it to the fullest and am hoping that by taking a course in Web 2.0, EME6414, that I will be able to do so.

  1. I was obsessed with those old school CD-Rom games when I was a kid. I was a big fan of "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego."

There is so much to learn about social media. It is so dynamic. Sometimes, I feel like just when I've mastered an app (still working on Snapchat), another one comes out!

  2. You got me thinking about my own introduction to technology and I remember our first home computer was an Apple IIGS with the 5.25-inch and 3.5-inch external floppy disk drives! I used to play the Oregon Trail and Carmen Sandiego too. I just found out that Netflix is going to release a new animated educational series of the same name in 2019 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F83QfaU3caw). I don’t really recall when I started using the Internet - of course now it’s hard to imagine a time without it. I do remember one of my friends in high school was big into BBS (bulletin board system) which I didn’t fully understand but was definitely cutting edge at the time. For a short period I tried my hand at html and flash to build my own website using the free web hosting provided by our earthlink ISP. It was solely for hosting pictures of my kids to share with relatives and it didn’t last for very long, primarily because of how time consuming it was. Even after I had the framework of the site created it was tedious to name each picture, resize it for a thumbnail, upload it to the server, etc. Eventually it wasn’t worth it, especially as dedicated photo sharing sites rose in popularity. I actually just came across my Photobucket account with pictures I had forgotten I uploaded - what a walk down memory lane! As far as Web 2.0 is concerned, I’ve only just recently started exploring. My kids were actually a step ahead of me as they had been using Google docs to collaborate on classroom assignments for a few years now. I actually had to ask for help from them when I had to use Google docs for the first time in the ISLT program! I agree with you that there is so much out there that it is overwhelming to try and take it all in. I think the best approach is to always be open to trying new things as you never know when/where you’ll find the next big thing!

  3. I love how you brought back these old often forgotten staples of life back when we were young, like CD-ROM games, and a time before Windows XP. I had a similar experience of technology exploding my world when I worked at Brightstar as an IT Finance Intern. I've learned so much about technology which I am so grateful to get to use in the ISLT program.
